What is the Pony Express Fast Break Offense

Unlocking The Full Offense Potential

A Transition that Dominates Defenses.

Offense: The Pony Express Scoring System

This offense has been designed on a geometric scale. If the proper movements are applied, it will dominate the defense. These simple, yet physically taxing, baseball/softball base path sprints are coordinated to produce a creative, innovative, and productive response. In other words, the offensive player with the ball has automatic lead passes laid out for them. The ballhandler knows that a spot will be filled because that is the demands of the movements. Consequently, the ball can be passed before the spot is filled. The intentions of this offense aim to maximize the total team concept.

Core Components of the Pony Express Offense

  • Spacing the floor for optimal movement.
  • Quick decision-making under pressure.
  • Utilizing different entry points for scoring.
  • It makes fatigue a part of the game.

The Bermuda Triangle

The area of the floor where shooting percentages appear to be higher.

The Playground

The area of the floor where shooting percentages appear to be lower.

9 Spots

The 9 spots are used as reference points to simplify locating specific spots on the offensive end of the floor.

Strategy at the heart of the game

Basketball schemes are the tactical blueprints that guide teams on offense and defense. From quick transitions to lockdown defensive setups, these strategies are designed to outmaneuver opponents and maximize team potential.

The Pony Express design starts with the defensive end: the close out, the game plan defensive scheme, the contact box out, the rebound, and the outlet. From this point, the Pony Express Transition kicks in using the Captain Ball process. The Captain Ball rules then start to stretch the conventional defensive transition tactics, methodically creating mathematical advantages as it attacks the rim for the finish.

Offensive Schemes

Man-to-Man and Zone offensive structures are designed to try and dominate the defensive structure. Using specific starting spots, the offensive structure should be simple movements where the athletes learn to move every two seconds, which should also lend itself to improving shooting percentages. This begs the question: Should offensive structures be designed so that shooters pop out to shoot?

Fast Break Offense: An efficient fast break program omits dribbling. The ball should rarely touch the floor. The Captain Ball drill makes this happen. It forces a team to become a team. Captain Ball emphasizes passing to spots instead of people. The initial Captain Ball rules do not require “high speed” movements, but rather smooth control. The speed of the transition process happens because of the speed of the forward pass. The players on the floor must execute base path sprints from location to location to keep pace with the ball.

Defensive Schemes

Defense: Defensive structure can dictate where shots are taken.
Dividing the floor in a specified way affects the accuracy of the shot.

Full-Court Press: It looks like a full-court press, but is it really a press?

The Pony Express Fast Break Offense:

A System for All Levels

What Makes This Offense Unique?

What makes the Pony Express Transition unique is its required disciplined Movement, all of which is based on a geometric scale. Each player on the floor has a dynamic responsibility, which creates a balance. And, they cannot make up for one another either. The passing of the ball is a trigger for movement. It is that movement which creates an offensive pattern that’s very difficult to defend. The movements constantly create mathematical advantages. The floor is  split in specific ways, optimizing player positioning.

Geometric Precision: The 9 Spots

This strategy uses five triangular movements designed to exploit defensive weaknesses. Each movement aligns with ‘9 Spots,’ enhancing court awareness and creating endless offensive options tailored to your team.

Re-thinking Transition Play

The Captain Ball game is the cornerstone of this system. The amount of time Captain Ball requires in and out of season happens because transition is at least 85% of the game. All situational variables that make up the game must be practiced as an attachment to the Captain Ball action (turnovers, steals, rebounding, scoring after made baskets, presses, etc.). The Captain Ball is the weapon to use when any situation occurs, so it must be practiced.
